Behavioral Activation

Improving Mood

Behavioral Activation is a time-limited, evidence-based treatment for depression that combats depression through behaviors, as there is a very dynamic relationship between mood and activity. Typically with depression, a person is less active; the less active, the less connected; the less connected, the worse a person feels, and so on. Behavioral Activation therapy examines current activities and identify areas of reduced activity or avoidance. Then, workable goals to increase or resume engagement in behaviors that individuals find important and rewarding are set. As a person feels more accomplished, productive, and connected, mood and self-esteem increase. Goals generally start small and grow as a person is able. Research shows that Behavioral Activation is effective alone or in addition to medication.
